Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery or "keyhole" surgery allows surgeons to perform operations using small incisions, avoiding big scars and the benefits of less pain, decreased hospital stay, quicker return to activity and work and better cosmetic result.

Laparoscopic surgery can now be applied to colorectal surgery. It can now be used to perform complex surgeries to remove part or all of the small and/or large bowel by a specialist colorectal surgeon for conditions like bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. Like all surgery it carries its own complications but these are significantly reduced when carried out in experienced, high volume colorectal units.

The use of laparoscopic surgery in colorectal conditions has been well documented in the literature and has been shown to be a safe procedure when compared to conventional surgery. Patients experienced less pain, faster return to work and better cosmetic results.
